Databases

Using the simplified database software, JuniorViewpoint, the data was analysed using the tools available, e.g. most, least, average. Graphs were also created to compare and contrast different variables, to help identify any trends.

  1. Well done, Pat. You demonstrate a good level of competence with the database. Can you think of a situation where you might use a database in class?

  2. What age group do you think this database should be aimed at? I feel it is too complex for KS1 and feel that years 5 + 6 may just about get to grips with it. Given this, I wonder how useful it is to have in school given that Excel spreadsheets can sort data just as efficiently.

  3. With the year 4 class I worked with I know that this programme was being introduced to them as I was leaving the school. They were to collect data as a class, as was done above, about themselves and were to all then input it into a database. Each person would then play around with the software to compare and contrast the data collected. The use of databases would be good to look at trends found in many different types of data, e.g. traffic data (looking at cars going past on a particular road), looking at data collected in a questionnaire etc. and would help children present data in different ways, interpret it and find trends within the data collected.

In response to your query Soula, I feel that this programme would be a little easier for children to use than excel, but should be introduced within KS2, once they have started to look at different methods of presenting/collecting data. I feel that we, as adults, have got used to Excel, but in reality it is easier to sort, select, compare and contrast data and make charts and graphs using Junior Viewpoint than it is using Excel; plus the buttons, layout etc. are simplified and more child friendly. However, Juniorviewpoint does have its limitations - I feel that far more complex/specific calculations etc. can be done with Excel that can't be done with Juniorviewpoint.
